Domestic abuse may come in many forms. You do not have to be black and blue to be a victim of domestic violence. Emotional, physical, sexual, financial, and spiritual abuse are all types of abuse. If you answer "yes" to a majority of the questions below, please call us today and talk with a member of our staff to learn how you can break free from a dangerous relationship.

If you are in an abusive relationship there are steps you can take to improve your safety and the safety of your children. And before leaving there is important information you need to remember.
    When you decide to leave:    
     
Call Family Services of McDowell County (828-652-6150) so that we may help you develop a safety plan! It is important we be aware of your plan so that we may contact the authorities in case of an emergency. We will be with you every step of the way.
     
Put aside an extra set of car keys and house keys
     
Practice how to get out safely. Practice with your children
     
Pack an extra set of clothes for you and your children and hide them in a safe place
     
Take with you important phone numbers and items such as: drivers license, social security cards for you and your children, medication, list of credit cards, bank account information, medical records, insurance records, children's medical records, birth certificates, marriage license and other legal documents.

The effects of domestic violence can be devastating and long lasting. Continued exposure to this kind of treatment may cause severe physical and emotional problems including:
